SPOONER — On a cold and rainy Thursday, April 25, the young Spooner Rails girls soccer team hosted Phillips. At 0-5 in the Heart O’ North Conference and 0-8 overall, the Spooner girls had been playing hard but were still searching for their first win of the season.

    They got it!

“We won 4-1,” said a happy coach Nick Merkt.

Coach Merkt gave a recap of the game.

“Everyone executed their job to the best of their ability and we got a great team result,” said Merkt. “Elizabeth Frye scored a hat trick (3 goals) and Aurora Kupsch tallied one, as well.

“Cold and wet conditions made it challenging to connect passes as much as we would have liked, but nonetheless we played some of our best soccer in my four years as coach of the girls’ program. As I’ve said before, we are a team comprised of different playing backgrounds and most of the team has learned the game of soccer in high school. To do what we are doing is really a testament to the grit of our team.”

The girls will remain busy on the soccer field. This week, on Tuesday, they traveled to Hayward for a game with the Hurricanes.

On Thursday, May 2, the Rails will return home to Spooner for a 5 p.m. game against Barron/Bloomer/Cumberland.

On Tuesday, May 14, Spooner goes back on the road as they travel to Osceola for a game at 6 p.m.
