Eight people displaced due to east Spokane apartment fire

SPOKANE, Wash. -- Spokane Valley and city firefighters knocked down a two-alarm second-story apartment fire in east Spokane Friday morning.

According to Spokane Valley Fire, firefighters responded to Cahterine Johnson Court Apartments on E. 4th Avenue and S. Thierman Road around 4:45 a.m.

SVFD says callers reported flames from a balcony on the second floor of the building. Firefighters upgraded the fire to a second alarm which calls in more resources.

Firefighters say the fire was burning a patio, two balconies, and all three floors on the courtyard side. Firefighters were able to evacuate residents on all three floors including two people in wheelchairs. An internal sprinkler system helped keep the fire from spreading into the attic.

SVFD says no injuries were reported but four adults, four children, and multiple pets were displaced.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
