Contract for Spokane's largest homeless shelter set to expire

SPOKANE, Wash. - The Salvation Army's contract to run Spokane's largest homeless shelter is coming to an end, Monday.

The city council will vote on a plan that would extend that contract, but during her campaign, Mayor Lisa Brown said she wanted to move away from the TRAC shelter.

"I believe the Trent shelter was the biggest single mistake of [The Woodward] administration and I do not think it's an adequate facility for the unhoused population," said Brown.

The Brown Administration said it wants to move to a more scattered shelter system. Instead of having one main shelter like the TRAC shelter, Mayor Brown said beds would be spread out among different neighborhoods.

City officials told 4 News Now they are working on an amendment on the current contract with the Salvation Army that would allow the TRAC shelter to continue operating white the city transitions to it's scattered shelter plan.
