    Top performers this week in high school athletics, including baseball Upper State finals

    Here are the top performers in Upstate high school athletics this week. Check back for updates.

    Wednesday

    Boys

    Baseball

    Nelson Vaughan, Southside Christian: Vaughan pitched six shutout innings with 10 strikeouts and also went 3-for-3 at the plate with two RBIs as Southside Christian beat Christ Church, 10-0, for the Class A Upper State championship. The Sabres will start the state finals Saturday at Latta with a home game Tuesday in the best-of-three.

    Alex Kiniry, Blue Ridge: Kiniry pitched the last five outs of a 2-1 win against Daniel to stay alive in the Class AAA Upper State championship. He got two outs with the bases loaded in the sixth. Kiniry also drove in the winning run with a sacrifice fly in the top of the fifth.

    Will Ruth, Dorman: Ruth took medalist honors at the Class AAAAA golf state championship with a 140 and won with a birdie on the third playoff hole.

    Dawson Szabo, Blue Ridge: Szabo won medalist honors at the Class AAA state tournament with a 140 to win by three shots.

    Monday

    Baseball

    AJ Cammarota, Blue Ridge: Cammarota pitched 5.2 shutout innings as Blue Ridge beat Fountain Inn, 9-1, in an elimination game of the Class AAA Upper State championship bracket. Cammarota struck out seven and allowed only two hits and three walks. T

    Brady Cisson, Christ Church: Cisson pitched six shutout innings and allowed just two hits and four walks as Christ Church beat Dixie, 2-1, and advanced to Wednesday’s Class A Upper State championship at St. Joseph’s.

    Quint Cumbie, Daniel: Cumbie had two hits and three RBIs in a 9-8 loss to Powdersville in the Class AAA Upper State championship bracket.

    Colten Earnhardt, Dorman: Earnhardt and two hits and three RBIs as Dorman beat J.L. Mann, 8-4, in an elimination game in the Class AAAAA Upper State championship bracket.  The Cavaliers (18-13) will play Wednesday at Lexington (28-7) and will have to win twice for the title.

    Chance Kennedy, Powdersville: Kennedy had a walk-off single in the bottom of the seventh inning to score two runs as Powdersville rallied to beat Daniel. Kennedy had three hits and three RBIs. The Patriots (22-9) will host the Upper State championship.

    Cade Norton, Blue Ridge: Norton was 2-for-4 with a pair of doubles, two runs scored and three RBIs.

    Girls

    Softball

    Emma Evans, Belton-Honea Path: Evans was 2-for-3 with a double, a run scored, and an RBI as Belton-Honea Path beat Crescent in the winners’ bracket of the Class AAA Upper State championship. The Bears (32-4) will play host Friday in the title game.

    Kaylee Hannon, Byrnes: Hannon had two hits, including a home run, in a 12-11 loss to Lexington in the Class AAAAA Upper State finals. The Rebels (27-4) will play Wednesday in an elimination game at home against Clover (21-6) for a spot against Lexington (19-7) in the Friday championship.

    Halle Tompkins, Palmetto: Tompkins pitched a four-hit shutout with nine strikeouts to eliminate Woodruff, 6-0, in the Class AAA Upper State final. Palmetto will play Wednesday at Crescent in another elimination game.

    Ellanie Yarrell, Byrnes: Yarrell was 2-for-2 with a home run and four RBIs.
