SPARTA, NJ – The Sparta Board of Education selected the newest board of education member at their April meeting.  Emily Serafino was sworn in to take the position vacated by Jennifer Grana Lonsky who resigned in February.

“There were five great applicants, all good candidates,” Board of education president Kurt Morris said.

Serafino was nominated by Morris and received a unanimous vote.  Only one other person, Melissa Churchwell, was nominated from the pool of five applicants.  The board of education members interviewed the applicants prior to the public portion of the meeting.

Serafino graduated from Sparta High School in 2009 and is the Director of Camp Sacawajea summer day camp.

“I am excited to get started,” Serafino said. “I’m excited to contribute.”

She will stay in her seat through December.  The position will be on the ballot as a two-year term, in addition to the three 3-year seats.
