22 dogs rescued from an Oxnard-area river bottom now need homes
Authorities rescued 22 dogs this week that were living around an encampment in the Oxnard area, near Fifth Street and Harbor Boulevard. The Oxnard Animal Safety Unit received reports of dogs in the area, also near the West Montalvo Oil Field, officials said. Ventura County Animal Services and nonprofit Dog Days Search and Rescue responded to the police department's request for help. The groups secured the dogs, including eight puppies, and took them to the county shelter in Camarillo. The dogs ranged in age from young to full adults and were described as mixed breeds. Both of the county's shelters already were operating around 130% of capacity. "We are hopeful that our community will rally around these dogs to get them adopted or out with rescues quickly," animal services said in a statement. County officials said the group likely started out as just a few dogs that individuals staying in the area had fed. The dogs then multiplied over several months. At the shelter, the dogs will be spayed or neutered, vaccinated, treated for fleas and given microchips. The adults were available for adoption right away but people may need to wait to take them home until they are treated.
