Grand Jury Indicts Somerville Man Charged in Murder of Mary Rose Fealey in Somerville Jan. 30

Somerville resident David C. Shroitman, 27 has been indicted by a Somerset County Grand Jury, charged in the Jan. 30 murder of Mary Rose Fealey, 27, who lived one mile from the suspect's home in Brookside Gardens. They were high school classmates.

SOMERVILLE, NJ – A Somerset County Grand Jury has indicted Somerville resident David C. Shroitman, 27 for the Jan. 30 murder of Mary Rose Fealey, 27, of North Bridge Street, who lived one mile from the suspect's apartment in Brookside Gardens, according to Somerset County Prosecutor John P. McDonald.

Shroitman was indicted on charges of 1st degree Murder with Aggravating Factors; 3rd degree Hindering Apprehension or Prosecution; 3rd degree Possession of a Weapon for an Unlawful Purpose; 4th degree Unlawful Possession of a Weapon; and 4th degree Stalking.

He has been in custody at the Somerset County Jail since his arrest Feb. 5.

Somerset County Prosecutor’s Office Chief of County Detectives Francisco Roman Jr. provided the following account:

Somerville Police responed to a 911 call reporting an unconscious woman outside a residential complex on North Bridge Street at 10:20 p.m. Jan. 30. It was later determined that the victim had suffered 37 stab wounds.

Police initiated life-saving measures at the scene along with responding medical personnel. Fealey was pronounced deceased at the scene.

Detectives from the Somerville Police Department along with detectives from the Somerset County Prosecutor’s Office Major Crimes Unit, the Crime Scene Investigations Unit, and Medical investigators from the New Jersey Northern Regional Medical Examiner’s Office responded to conduct the investigation.

A postmortem examination was performed on Feb. 1 by the Medical Examiner’s Office who
positively identified the victim and determined the cause of death as multiple stab wounds and
ruled the manner of death as homicide.

Investigators worked relentlessly to identify the suspect involved. On Sunday, Feb. 4, investigators obtained a Somerset County Superior Court Ordered Search for the residence of Shroitman, his vehicle and person. Shortly after 11 p.m., detectives from the Somerset County Prosecutor’s Office along with Somerville Police detectives and Somerville patrol officers executed the search warrant and located Mr. Shroitman who was detained by authorities.

Based on the investigation, Shroitman was formally arrested and charged on Monday, Feb. 5. The investigation revealed that Shroitman was known to the victim. They were classmates at Somerville High School. Police have also said that there was no relationship between the two.

During the course of the investigation, police obtained video footage from doorbell cameras and home surveillance systems that showed the suspect in the vicinity of the murder scene on North Bridge Street. The suspect was also observed scrubbing the interior of his car with bleach. Traces of blood were found in the car, as well as inside his apartment, along with bottles of bleach.
