    10th Annual Woodward Puppy Prom returns

    Returning this prom season, Helen Woodward Animal Center invites elegant, fluffy alumni and friends for a celebration of animal rescue. The Center’s Puppy Prom brings four-legged companions together on the dance floor in search of the “Best Dressed Prom King and Queen!” Grab your forever, furry prom date and bump star-studded collars with other adoptees at the 10th Annual Puppy Prom on Saturday, May 18 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., hosted by Original 40 Brewing: 3117 University Ave, San Diego, 92104.

    Original 40 Brewing will donate 30% of all food and drink purchases during the event to support Helen Woodward Animal Center pets and programs. Additionally, the dog-friendly business will reveal the new label for their PAWSitive Memories Blonde Ale. Throughout April, more than 50 contestants raised nearly $8,000 to help orphan pets at Helen Woodward Animal Center. The top two fundraisers will be announced at Puppy Prom, and have their adorable faces featured on the limited-edition beer. The Prom-themed party is free to attend for all who support animal rescue.

    RSF Republican Women Federated to hold meet and greet mixer with candidates

    Save the date: The Rancho Santa Fe Republican Women Federated (RSFRWF) will hold a special event (rather than a general meeting) on Tuesday, May 21, from 6:30 – 8:30 p.m. in the La Valle Coastal Club Ballroom, 5690 Cancha de Golf, RSF. Cost: $25/person will include hors d’oeuvres and a no host bar. Reservations are required.

    This will be a mixer for you (and your guests) to meet and greet the 2024 Republican candidates, and the movers and shakers in the San Diego Republican Party. RSVP by Saturday, May 18, to www.rsfrwf.org.

    Solana Beach Friends of the Library to hold Spring concert

    The Solana Beach Friends of the Library invites all to attend its Spring concert, to be held on Tuesday, May 21 at 5:30 p.m. at the Solana Beach Library.

    Returning to the venue once again, Adrienne Nims and Spirit Wind, featuring pianist Dan Bailey and percussionist Gerlando Compilati, will be taking the audience on a musical journey with lush harmonies, mystical melodies, and global rhythms. The band’s music, performed on flutes, saxophones, keyboard and percussion is elegant, earthy, and multidimensional, combining Jazz, Latin, Pop, R&B, and many different styles from around the globe.

    Adrienne Nims & Spirit Wind have performed at such well-known venues as the Getty Museum of Los Angeles, the California Center for the Arts, the San Diego Zoo, Quail Botanical Gardens, as well as major jazz festivals. Come join this wonderful event.

    Note that this performance will begin at 5:30 p.m. and not the usual time of 6 p.m. Parking is free and there is no charge for this event. The Solana Beach Library is located at 157 Stevens Avenue.

    This will be the last Friends Night Out evening for the school year. Friends Night Out will take the summer off and start up again in September.

    Cabrillo Chamber Orchestra to present "English Music for Strings"

    Cabrillo Chamber Orchestra, led by artistic director Gregory Lawrence, will present "English Music for Strings" on Sunday, May 19 at 4 p.m. at Incarnation Lutheran Church, 16889 Espola Road, Poway. The event will feature music by Ralph Vaughn Williams, Edward Elgar, Benjamin Britten and William Lloyd Webber.     Batiquitos Lagoon to host family walk

    Batiquitos Lagoon will hold a family walk on May 18 at 10 a.m. Attendees will be revisiting the local bird population now that the winter migrators have departed for points north. There might be some summer visitors visible around the lagoon. Docents will also share their knowledge of the lagoon environment of plants and wildlife. Bring binoculars or some are available at the Nature Center. This free, family walk is good for all ages. Registration is required. Meet at the Nature Center, 7380 Gabbiano Lane, Carlsbad.     La Costa Canyon High School Music Program to present Spring Pops Concert

    The La Costa Canyon High School Music Program will present its annual Spring Pops Concert for the community on Tuesday, May 21, from 6 p.m. - 8 p.m. at the La Costa Canyon High School Theater (1 Maverick Way, Carlsbad, 92009).

    This will be a fun-filled evening starting at 6 p.m. with a jazz combo performance and more outside of the theater. The concert will begin at 6:30 p.m. in the theater and feature student performances from the jazz band, jazz combo, guitar ensemble, rock band, piano instrumentalists and the La Costa Canyon High School Band. Attendees will hear popular music ranging from the turn of the century to modern times. The theater entrance fee is $5 per person and $10 for a family. All proceeds from the event go right back to the music program for new instruments and equipment, repairs and instrumental coaches as well as other expenses.

    North Coast Women’s Connection to hold “Fleurs & Fashion Luncheon”

    All are invited to the North Coast Women’s Connection “Fleurs & Fashion Luncheon” on Tuesday, May 14, from 10:45 a.m. - 1 p.m. It will be held at the Lomas Santa Fe Country Club in Solana Beach. The event guest speaker will be Rhonda Keliipio sharing “Did I Say Yes To That?”

    The fashion show program will feature fashionista Jenna Motta of ICONS Boutique in Solana Beach.

    'World of Orchids' at San Diego Botanic Garden

    The San Diego Botanic Garden hosts its annual spring orchids showcase, “World of Orchids,” from May 4 through May 27 at 300 Quail Gardens Drive. The immersive display will be in the Dickinson Family Education Conservatory, an 8,000-square-foot, glass-enclosed conservatory. The show includes plants from members of the San Diego County Orchid and Palomar Orchid societies along with orchids and supplies from local businesses. Vendors will be at the garden on certain weekends selling plants, potting supplies and other items. The garden is open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily (except Tuesdays). Reservations are recommended for “World of Orchids.” Admission to “World of Orchids” is free for members and an additional $7 for nonmembers ages 17 and older with the purchase of a one-day ticket; no cash transactions.

    Secret Garden Tour in La Jolla

    The La Jolla Historical Society’s 25th annual Secret Garden Tour takes place May 17-18. The event opens to the public some of La Jolla's loveliest private gardens. The tour typically includes historic homes and examples of unique architecture, and there will be musicians and plein air artists along with dining table designs at the various gardens. On the day of the tour, attendees register at the La Jolla Historical Society Wisteria Cottage, 780 Prospect St., where the Garden Boutique will showcase merchants with items for gardeners and homeowners. Attendees receive a program booklet with the locations and map of the secret gardens. The Secret Garden Party is from 6 to 8:30 p.m. May 17. The Secret Garden Tour on May 18 includes a self-guided tour from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. (Registration opens at 9 a.m. and gardens open at 10 a.m.) A Platinum Tour is from 9:15 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Tickets are $45 -$155.     Del Mar's popular Summer Solstice returns on June 20, from 5-8 p.m. at Powerhouse Park and beach in Del Mar. The event helps support programming to improve Del Mar's beach and ocean, and its small business community.

    North Coast Symphony Presents Spring Across America

    The North Coast Symphony Orchestra presents Spring Across America, a musical journey, on Saturday, May 11, at 2:30 p.m. at the San Dieguito United Methodist Church, 170 Calle Magdelena, Encinitas. The performance includes Mississippi Suite by Ferde Grofe, Yosemite Suite by Daniel Swem and the classic Appalachian Spring by Aaron Copland, with its iconic Shaker melody Simple Gifts.     La Jolla Playhouse to present world premiere musical 'The Ballad of Johnny and June'

    The La Jolla Playhouse will present "The Ballad of Johnny and June" May 28-July 7, 2024. Location: Mandell Weiss Theatre, La Jolla Playhouse: 2910 La Jolla Village Drive, La Jolla.

    Country music royalty Johnny Cash and June Carter Cash remain to this day one of the most famous couples of the 20th Century. Created with the support of the family and told through the eyes of their son John Carter Cash, this new musical covers it all: their childhoods, their 1956 meeting at the Grand Ole Opry, the storied on-stage proposal in 1968, and the soaring highs and whiplash lows of fame, life on the road, addiction, arrests, controversies, marriage, family and devotion. This is a whole-hearted and clear-eyed telling of one of the most iconic love stories in music history, complete with a soundtrack of beloved hits.

    Foster youth artwork on display at the San Diego Watercolor Society

    Just in Time for Foster Youth and The San Diego Watercolor Society have joined forces to organize a series of workshops aimed at promoting mental health and healing among transition-age foster youth. Art pieces crafted during these workshops, along with submissions from JIT participants, will be showcased at the San Diego Watercolor Society’s Liberty Station gallery (2825 Dewey Rd, Suite 105, Building 202, San Diego, 92106) throughout May.

    The show will open with a reception at the San Diego Watercolor Society’s First Friday Art Opening on May 3 from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. and will be displayed until May 31.     'A conversation on the bipartisan future of climate policy'

    "A conversation on the bipartisan future of climate policy" will be held May 16, from 5 p.m.-6:15 p.m., at Malamud Conference Room, Institute of the Americas: 9899 International Lane, La Jolla, 92093.

    The discussion will focus on author Benji Backer’s book "The Conservative Environmentalist: Common Sense Solutions for a Sustainable Future." Backer and moderator David G. Victor will discuss the book's findings and look at the larger debate around the future of climate policy in the U.S.

    The event is hosted by Deep Decarbonization Initiative at the UC San Diego School of Global Policy and Strategy.
