    Soda Springs High School sends six to Idaho Syringa Girls State and two to Idaho Gem Boys State

    SODA SPRINGS — Eight juniors including six girls and two boys from Soda Springs High School have the opportunity to go to leadership programs thanks to local American Legion chapters.

    According to a news release from Soda Springs High School, six juniors are going to the Syringa Girls State program, which will take place at Northwest Nazarene University in Nampa June 9 through June 14. The girls get to go to the program thanks to the Lava Hot Springs American Legion Auxiliary Unit 88.

    The girls will have the opportunity to learn how the government works, win scholarships and awards and even earn college credit.

    The girls from Soda Springs who will be going include Elizabeth Beutler, Macie Clegg, Rebekah Evans, Samantha Lowry, Alexandra Strum and Catherine Walker.

    According to the news release, Beutler is involved in many different sports, including cross country, softball and track. She is also involved in musical theater and Family Career and Community Leaders of America.

    Beutler's other accomplishments include making the Honor Roll of National Honor Society and she is the 2022-2023 Youth Writing Contest winner. She is part of the 2024 Distinguished Young Women, and she is a youth group leader in her church. She plans to serve a religious mission and pursue a career in education.

    Clegg is involved in E-sports, musical theater and Student Council where she currently serves as Junior Vice President. She also enjoys working on landscaping and she is on the Honor Roll of National Honors Society.

    According to the news release, Clegg plans to serve a religious mission and pursue a degree in Bioinformatics. She hopes to have a van or bus to use for her research.

    Evans is involved in cross country, track, Business Professionals of America and the 2024 Distinguished Young Women. She is also on the Honor Roll of National Honors Society.

    Outside of school, Evans volunteers at the library for the summer reading program and is a licensed CNA. She plans to go on a humanitarian mission to Guatemala over the summer and eventually serve a religious mission and pursue a career in nursing or teaching.

    According to the news release, Lowry is also a certified CNA and is involved with the 2024 Distinguished Young Women. She currently works at the Soda Springs Public Library.

    Lowry is actively involved with her church where she serves as secretary in her youth group. She plans to attend BYU Idaho and pursue a career in Interior Design.

    Strum serves as the team manager for the Soda Springs High School football team and the photographer for the baseball team. She is also involved in construction, drawing and culinary arts.

    Strum also enjoys photography and has a part-time cleaning job. After high school, she plans to attend Idaho State University and major in the Physical Therapy Assistant Program.

    Walker is involved in several sports, including basketball, volleyball and track. She has won a few medals for track and has gone to state basketball twice. She is on the Honor Roll of the National Honors Society and was the runner-up at the Distinguished Young Women's competition.

    Walker plans to go on a humanitarian mission to Africa this summer. After high school, she plans to study dermatology at Utah State University.

    According to the news release, two junior boys from Soda Springs High School will be able to attend Idaho Gem Boys State thanks to the Soda Springs American Legion Post 62.

    Boys State will take place June 2 through June 7 at Gowen Field in Boise. Like the girls, the boys will have the opportunity to win awards, scholarships and collage credit.

    The two boys that will be participating in Boys State are Kyen Kirby and Degan Stoor.

    Kirby is involved in baseball and basketball at Soda Springs High School. He is a member of the Honor Society where he is on the Honor Roll.

    Outside of school, Kirby works on his grandfather's farm and enjoys golfing with his friends. After high school, he plans to study psychology at Idaho State University. He hopes to earn a medical degree in psychiatry.

    According to the news release, Stoor is heavily involved in student council where he will serve as student body president next year. He is also involved in cross country, track and basketball.

    Stoor currently works as a CNA and is active in his church group and club track. He hopes to run in college, and he plans to study sports medicine at Utah State University.
