SOCASTEE, S.C. (WBTW) — News13 is introducing a new segment called “The Crystal Apple,” where once per month we will honor a teacher, administrator or counselor who is making a difference in the Grand Strand and Pee Dee communities.

Our first nominee is Bobby Curran from Socastee High School. Known as coach Curran by his students, he has been with Horry County Schools for six years.

He’s a physical education and health teacher. In addition to coaching and teaching, he plays a very special role in the community. He founded the “One Love” club.

The club gives students a comprehensive look at building and maintaining healthy relationships — whether that be romantic, familial or relationships with friends.

Students in the club attend workshops where they have discussions about what makes a relationship healthy or unhealthy.

Curran said he wanted to start the club because it’s important for young people to be able to identify those differences.

“My whole goal with One Love was to impact one person,” Curran said. “I really just want people to explicitly understand what a healthy relationship should be. How you should talk to somebody, how you should treat somebody.”

The club has about 50 students right now, and it’s always growing. They have even done collaborations with high school sports teams, the Socastee Theater Department and Coastal Carolina University.

Curran also speaks at schools around the state spreading the message.

If you would like to nominate someone for The Crystal Apple, send an email to NEWS@WBTW.COM . Tell us why you chose that person and attach a photo.
