FRESNO, Calif. ( KSEE/KGPE ) – Two people were rescued from the Merced River in Snelling on Wednesday, according to the Merced County Sheriff’s Office.

Sheriff Vern Warnke says deputies and Cal Fire responded to the river in Snelling for a report of two people hanging on to a tiny tree in the middle of the river.

Crews say they were able to rescue the people and they were unharmed.

The Sheriff’s Office had closed access to the Merced and San Joaquin Rivers because of a water release from the Merced irrigation department. Sheriff Warnke says It is a misdemeanor if you get in the river.

Sheriff Warnke adds that they are releasing 4,000 cubic feet of water per second due to the warmer temperatures and rapid snow melt.
