Milwaukee roundabout could be replaced. That plan wins city funding OK
The possible replacement of a Milwaukee roundabout that's been the site of dozens of car crashes since 2020 has seen its funding proposal win a key city endorsement. The proposal , from Mayor Cavalier Johnson's administration, calls for spending $17.2 million from the Reed Street Yards tax incremental financing district on street work, housing programs, and other projects within or near Walker's Point. That financing district uses property tax revenue generated by Reed Street Yards, a Walker's Point business park anchored by Rite-Hite Holding Corp.'s headquarters. The Common Council's Zoning, Neighborhoods and Development Committee recommended approval for the funding proposal at its July 28 meeting, with the full council to review it on July 31. The projects to be funded include an estimated $1.8 million to redesign and improve the Sixth Street Roundabout at West Florida Street. The roundabout saw 58 crashes from 2020 through 2023, an average of nearly 15 per year, according to the city Department of Public Works. Concrete barriers used to reduce Sixth Street traffic lanes near the roundabout from four to two have reduced speeding, according to the department, with 12 crashes from 2024 through 2025. Now, department officials want to consider other measures, including

Dockless Scooter Crash Downtown Spurs Debate, City Council Action
Milwaukee is no stranger to dangerous streets and reckless driving; it is unfortunately not uncommon to see cars ripping down streets, red lights being run, broken pieces of bumpers littering intersections and makeshift street memorials for victims. While the city and county work to tackle these issues, another menace to transportation safety has emerged, but not on city streets, rather on the sidewalks bordering them.

Can you skip paying Milwaukee parking tickets? Here's what would happen
I had a college roommate who insisted I didn't actually need to pay the parking tickets I collected from parking along the sidewalk outside our house. They surely wouldn't come after me with so many parking violators out there to deal with, right? Now, a few years – and a few fines – later, I know better. When I moved to Milwaukee, I was hit with several back-to-back overnight parking tickets before I finally had the post-move brain bandwidth to set up my parking permit. Most streets in Milwaukee require a permit for overnight parking if you're staying long-term. More recently, I got a warning ticket telling me I needed to renew my registration. I made plans to get it done, but after collecting those red and white slips together, the thought occurred to me: What would happen if I just didn't pay? I looked through city ordinances, state laws and guidance on the city's website and, as it turns out, it's nothing good. Here's what would happen – and why I decided to fork over the money. Downsizing Milwaukee County buses would save nothing | Letter
This letter is in response to the letter from Christine Renstrum (" Why can't we downsize all these empty buses ?" July 13). I worked for MCTS for 25 years. Downsizing the size of the bus saves nothing . Regardless of the length of the bus, the operating costs remain the same. The wages and benefits of the driver remain the same, as does fuel consumption and maintenance. The buses, regardless of length have the same size motor, as per manufacturer. Buses are not nearly empty during the rush hour, Brewers games, Wisconsin State Fair, Summerfest or ethnic festivals. How would smaller buses accommodate those crowds? Generally, we limit letters to 200 words. Cite sources of where you found information or the article that prompted your letter. Be civil and constructive, especially when criticizing.
