Knappa Fire District gets $1 million state grant for seismic retrofitting
The Knappa Fire District substation in Svensen has received over $1 million from Business Oregon as part of a seismic rehabilitation grant program. The grant will allow the substation to be seismically retrofitted in order to become more resistant to earthquakes.
Warrenton baseball starts playoffs with a win
With a league title in the bag, Warrenton High School baseball turned the page to a new chapter in their season: playoffs. Wednesday’s game against Yamhill-Carlton was the Warriors opening-round test with a return trip to the quarterfinals on the line. Behind Talon McGrorty’s complete game and an eight-run third inning, Warrenton beat the Tigers 11-1.

In an effort to zero in on their target of the State Championship next month, the Rainier Trap Team traveled to Newberg for a youth tournament recently. On May 11, fifteen team members made the trip, and they had some great results, according to Head Coach Jeff Sorenson. Huacuja maintains lead over Scheller as more ballots counted in county commission race
Anthony Huacuja has maintained his lead over Tessa Scheller in the District 2 race for the Clatsop County Board of Commissioners as more ballots were counted. After an update Thursday, Huacuja led Scheller 50% to 49%, or 1,122 to 1,094, a slightly tighter split than late Tuesday night.

Runolfson serves at Navy helicopter squadron in Japan
Airman Recruit Brandon Runolfson, of Hammond, serves in the U.S. Navy as an aviation electrician's mate in Helicopter Sea Combat Squadron 12 in Japan. Runolfson graduated from Warrenton High School in 2023 and joined the Navy a year ago. "I joined because my grandpa was a career Navy man,” he said. "I wanted to follow in his footsteps. I looked up to him, and I thought it would be a good way to see the world."

UPDATE: Assistant city manager, city attorney leave Longview
Longview is paying Assistant City Manager Ann Rivers and City Attorney Dana Gigler at least $100,000 combined to stop working for the city. Gigler and Rivers have agreed to buyout and separation agreements sent to them in the last two weeks by interim City Manager Jim Duscha. Gigler signed her agreement May 9 and will take effect on May 30, according to city records obtained through a public records request. Rivers’ agreement was signed Monday and took effect immediately.
