Three Sisters Historical Society hosts talk on interesting piece of area history: the Oregon Pacific Railroad

SISTERS, Ore. (KTVZ) -- The Three Sisters Historical Society hosted a get-together to discuss the Oregon Pacific Railroad on Sunday afternoon at the Sisters Fire Ha. Dozens showed up to learn about the railroad and its route through the Santiam Pass, also known as the Hogg Railroad.

"There were parts of it that were partially constructed and that still exist," retired land surveyor Jack Carlson said. "I'm going to show people where they are and describe how they can go to them and see them."

The presentation was one in the Three Sisters Historical Society's Fireside Series. The group has more than 100 members.

Board President Ronni Duff said, "Our mission is to just bring the Sisters-area historic information just to the forefront and to educate people about all of the history that went on before."

The Hogg Railroad was operated in the 1880's. It ran from Yaquina Bay on the Oregon coast to Corvallis, then onto Albany, Mill City and Detroit.

Duff said, "It was one of those railroads that never got completed because of funding. So that's why it's sort of historically unique, because it never really actually became a viable railroad."

Carlson, who gave the presentation, said said, "The railroad is a fascinating thing, and it's built on the face of a rock cliff. The walls are still there. They can be seen from the highway."

The next Three Sisters Historical Society Fireside Series event is on Sunday, April 21st, about the Lazy Z ranch.
