Couple injured in motorcycle collision with deer near Sioux Rapids
SIOUX RAPIDS, Iowa — A driver and his passenger were hospitalized Sunday after their motorcycle collided with a deer near Sioux Rapids. According to the Clay County Sheriff's Office, Michael Cowell, 58, of Cornell, Iowa, was eastbound on a Harley-Davidson Ultra Glide Classic in the 2000 mile of Iowa Highway 10 near Sioux Rapids at approximately 12:20 a.m., when a deer entered the road. Cowell struck the deer, and both he and his female passenger were dumped from motorcycle, which was totaled.

Driving Complaint Leads to Drug Charge
Emmetsburg, IA (KICD)– A driving complaint has landed a Curlew woman in jail on a drug charge. The Palo Alto County Sheriff’s Office was initially notified of a reckless driver Sunday morning on Highway 4 a couple miles south of Emmetsburg with the driver, 32-year-old Faith Myer, later being taken into custody for allegedly operating while intoxicated, possession of marijuana, interfence with official acts and driving on the wrong side of a two-way road.
Fiber Optic Network Complete in Sioux Rapids ; Rural Connectivity Expansion Underway
Evertek has completed the installation of a fiber optic network in Sioux Rapids. Unlimited and reliable fiber internet is now available throughout the community for residents and businesses. Construction is also underway to extend fiber connectivity to rural areas around Sioux Rapids. Cherokee Man Enters Plea in Hit and Run Case That Led to Death of Bicyclist
A Cherokee man who is accused of being involved in a deadly hit-and-run incident has pleaded not guilty. 29-year-old Casey Herwig is charged with one count of Knowingly Leaving The Scene of an Accident Resulting in Death. The charge stems from an incident that happened in Cherokee during the evening of December 26th of last year. Authorities reportedly received a call regarding a bicyclist laying in the roadway at the intersection of North 6th Street and West Willow. The bicyclist, identified as Phillip Watterson of Cherokee, died as a result of the hit-and-run.

Friday Traffic Stop Leads to Drug Charge
Greenville, IA (KICD)– A Storm Lake man was arrested on a drug offense over the weekend following a traffic. A Deputy with the Clay County Sheriff’s Office initiated the stop around seven o’clock Friday night on Highway 71 a short distance north of the turnoffs to Rossie and Greenville.
Storm Lake Man Charged Following Alleged Assault Involving Fire
Storm Lake, IA (KICD) — Authorities have charged a 37 year old Storm Lake man for allegedly assaulting a woman and lighting her hair on fire. They say Jonathan Belcher had two previous domestic assault conviction in Alabama. They took him into custody Monday after a female said she was attacked earlier in the evening at a residence on West 6th Street and was able to escape.
Details on Storm Lake Memorial Day Program
The Storm Lake Parade of Flags Foundation’s annual Memorial Day program will be held on Monday morning. The event will begin at 10am on the lawn of the Buena Vista County Courthouse. The featured speaker this year will be Linn Grove native Bob Carmichael, who is a retired sergeant first class U.S. Army soldier. Carmichael was an Iowa National Guard member for 29 years. He’s been stationed in communities including Storm Lake, Algona, Estherville, Fort Dodge, LeMars, and Sioux City.

The City of Storm Lake is encouraging residents and businesses to voluntarily conserve water as we head into the peak consumption time of the summer season. According to estimates by the Environmental Protection Agency, 50-percent of water used outdoors ends up going to waste due to evaporation, wind, runoff, and over-watering. Wise use of water can help ensure that there is plenty of supply in Storm Lake’s water towers for households and businesses, while maintaining a reserve for fire protection. Voluntary cooperation can help prevent the need for mandatory conservation measures.
Storm Lake Man In Custody Following Investigation Into Reported Domestic Abuse
A Storm Lake man is in custody following an investigation into reported domestic abuse. Yesterday (Monday) at approximately 10:45 p.m., the Storm Lake Police Department was called to Super 8 Motel for a welfare check on a female. When officers arrived, a female victim alleged that 37-year-old Johnathan Belcher of Storm Lake assaulted her earlier in the evening during an argument at a residence in the 400 Block of West 6th Street. The victim alleges Belcher pushed her to the ground, lit her hair on fire with a lighter, and then damaged several windows in the residence. She escaped the property and fled to the Super 8, where staff contacted authorities. In the incident, she sustained minor injuries to her upper body and hair, which did not require medical treatment. Belcher was located by Storm Lake Police shortly after the call and was taken into custody without incident. As a result of the incident, Belcher was charged with third-offense domestic abuse assault, a class D felony, reckless use of fire, and fourth-degree criminal mischief, both serious misdemeanors. Authorities say Belcher also has two prior convictions for domestic assault from 2019 in Alabama. He was booked into the Buena Vista County jail, where he was held on a $7,000 bond.

Rembrandt Man Arrested After Found to be Under The Influence
A little after 7:30 pm this past Saturday, May 20th, a Deputy from Clay County initiated a traffic stop on a vehicle in the 5000 mile of Hwy 71. The Deputy found that the driver of the vehicle, Damian Morton, age 32, of Rembrandt, was suspected of being under the influence of alcohol.
Tornado Softball Stays Unbeaten With Win in Battle Creek
The Storm Lake softball team improved to 3-0 on the season with a 12-0 victory in five innings tonight (Fri) at OA-BCIG. The Tornadoes scored eight of their runs with two outs. After the first two batters were set down in the 1st inning, the next seven reached base, and RBI singles by Taylor Ripke and Lillie Hoffman helped Storm Lake to a 4-0 lead.

The victim was able to escape the residence and fled to the motel. Police were then contacted by motel staff.
