SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — Rain, wind and the cold have caused a few setbacks for the South Dakota high school softball season this year.

The South Dakota spring weather has made this high school softball season a challenging one.

“Well, the girls haven’t had a whole lot of practice outside. They’ve been inside practicing some hitting, and maybe some light fielding, but if you can’t get out and get some good field practice in, it’s tough. It’s hard to play in a game,” Spearfish fan Chris Brown said.

“Our side has been getting a lot of rain and snow. It’s been a lot of inside practices. It’s kind of tough. It’s just a lot of hitting reps. We’re really lucky if we get three practices out on the field during a week. It’s hard,” Rapid City Central softball player Lilly Larson said.

Spearfish High School was supposed to play a couple of Sioux Falls schools last week in the Black Hills, but they had to move those games to Sioux Falls today, forcing parents, coaches and players to make an unexpected trip across the state.

“It’s a little bit of a trek, but we’re used to traveling this far when we play sports anyways. We would love to have them play on our home field, but we got nice weather here, and if you got to play, you got to play” Brown said.

But the teams that drove from Spearfish and Rapid City this weekend understand the importance of squeezing these games in.

“Everyone can get the games they need, make it a fair chance, have everyone at least get a record. Just getting the reps of games in, it’s nice to have,” Larson said.

“We have a lot of super young kids. They need to get the time in. We’re just lucky that we get to play. They need to play. We’re willing to drive here and watch these girls and watch them do a good job,” Brown said.

Teams have about two weeks of regular season games left until postseason play begins.
