Zaul Moniz-Deleon, 21, pleaded guilty to assault causing bodily injury, a serious misdemeanor, on April 17. As part of a plea agreement, Moniz-Deleon was sentenced to 20 days in the Woodbury County Jail. It will run concurrent with another sentencing of 10 years for an unrelated crime. He will also have to pay a $430 fine.
Moniz-Deleon was one of three people charged for assaulting another inmate . In the afternoon of Dec. 9, 2023, the victim was walking around the cell block in the Woodbury County Jail “minding his own where he then passed three males,” Owen Trudeau, Yasin Abdi, and Moniz-Deleon, who then followed him into a cell and assaulted him, court documents stated.
In an interview, the victim said the three learned about a previous case, saying he should give up his commissary before assaulting him.
Trudeau has also pleaded guilty to the assault , receiving the same sentence as Moniz-Deleon. Abdi, is set to have a pretrial conference for his charge on June 27.
Moniz-Deleon was in the jail at the time awaiting trial for a different case. According to the arresting documents, Moniz-Deleon was arrested in October 2023 after authorities executed a search warrant and allegedly found 12.8 grams of what tested positive as methamphetamine and also found him with a gun.
For this case, Moniz-Deleon pleaded guilty on March 15 to possession with intent to deliver a controlled substance – methamphetamine and carrying a danger weapon as part of a plea agreement. A count of failure to affix a drug stamp was dismissed. He was sentenced to 10 years in prison on the drug possession count and 90 day with a $430 fine on the other. The two sentences will run concurrently. A fine of $1,370 on the drug possession was suspended.
