Iowa sailor who died in World War II prison camp to be laid to rest in Sioux City

The remains of an Iowa sailor who died in a Japanese prison camp more than 80 years ago will be buried in Sioux City Saturday. Fireman first class Robert Shove was born in Cherokee in 1922 and lived most of his life in Sioux City before joining the Navy in 1940. Shove’s nephew Michael O’Brien says his uncle was captured in Corrigador as he and his shipmates from the U.S.S. Canopus fought the Japanese. He was then sent on the “Bataan Death March” to a prison in the Philippine Islands.

Iowa senator’s quest for votes gets her a chomp from man’s best friend

Many Iowa political candidates go to extraordinary lengths to woo voters. Democratic state Sen. Catelin Drey’s attempt landed her in the ER. Drey of Sioux City, who recently won reelection to state Senate District 1, took herself to the hospital for rabies shots after a dog took a "quarter-sized chunk" out of the back of her left knee while she knocked on voters’ doors on Nov. 2. After three hours in the emergency room, some of which she spent making phone bank calls from the waiting room, and a round of stitches, Drey resumed knocking doors in the rain on the same day − the day before Election Day. “There was no question that as soon as I left the emergency room, that's what I was going to do," Drey told the Register. "I said 'I need this to be as flexible as possible because I will be out knocking all day tomorrow.'” “They got me patched up and I went back on my way,” she said. Drey handily won reelection, beating her Republican opponent Christopher Prosch by nearly 15 percentage points, according to unofficial results from the Iowa Secretary of State's office. She was one of many Iowa legislative

Cities’ Overnight Parking Bans Taking Effect

Northwest Iowa — The nice weather forecast may have lulled some of us into a sense that winter is far off, but rest assured, winter and the snow and ice it brings are not far away. That means you might have to make other arrangements for parking your vehicle. Several cities in the KIWA listening area have ordinances regarding overnight parking, especially during the snow removal season, and the amount of the fine varies widely.
