As climate change threatens cemeteries, states look to Louisiana for help
Emily Dalfrey lives across the street from Niblett’s Bluff Cemetery, where generations of her family are buried, in Vinton, Louisiana. In 2016, a period of prolonged rainfall caused flooding so severe that people could drive boats over the cemetery. The water put so much pressure on the graves that some of the vaults, which are located near the surface, popped open. Some of Dalfrey’s own family members’ caskets were carried away and deposited in her yard.
Seven NELA squads advance to state tournament
MONROE, La. (KNOE) - The state semifinals are set as seven NELA squads punched their tickets to Sulphur. Five area teams get the semifinal action started Tuesday. In Non-Select Division V, Quitman needs to get past Pitkin and Weston must beat Hicks for an all-Jackson Parish grudge match in the title game. Family Community faces off against Grace Christian. Mangham and Oak Grove hope to win their semifinal games for a shot at an all-NELA showdown in the championship. Sterlington will be out for revenge against Berwick, who ended the Panthers’ season the past two years. West Monroe faces Sam Houston in a rematch of last year’s 4-3 walk-off win in the semifinals.
West Monroe and Sterlington punch their tickets to Sulphur
MONROE, La. (KNOE) - The Rebels are headed back to Sulphur for the fifth consecutive year. West Monroe completed the quarterfinal series comeback over Central, 8-1. Garrett Frye set the tone on the mound (5 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 4 K, 3 BB). Seniors shined at the plate. Trey Hawsey recorded three of the Rebs’ eight hits. John Pearson delivered a two-run single (intentionally walked twice). Hayden Federico ended with a RBI double. Sterlington punched its ticket back to Sulphur, sweeping its quarterfinal series against Westlake 2-1. Dylan Downs tossed a complete game gem, allowing just two hits with one walk on 80 pitches. Tre Burch delivered the game-winning two-run double in the sixth inning.
