The Peanut Factory will host Gunning in November
Edenton’s artist retreat and residency program, The Peanut Factory, will host a ceramic artist whose work explores issues of identity using clay, discarded objects and personal belongings as the materials used in creating her art. Nickie Gunning, an interdisciplinary artist based in Metro Detroit, will be in residence from Nov. 15-28 and will create artwork for an upcoming solo exhibition at the Mouse House Gallery in Detroit. Gunning, who also teaches art at community centers, said the opportunity to connect with a community is an important part of choosing a residency. “As an art teacher, community engagement is at the core of my character, so community-centered residencies allow me to educate no matter where I am,” Gunning said. “The Peanut Factory specifically combines my community interests with the space and time to develop new artistic concepts in a creative environment.” Gunning describes the work as sculptural self-portraiture, using forms inspired by the body’s movements and interactions. Rather than depicting a face or a conventional likeness, the pieces draw on personal experiences, emotions and perception of identity. The artist constructs ceramic vessels and combines them with discarded items found nearby, along with cherished objects and personal belongings. The result is a

This North Carolina BBQ Joint Still Smokes Meat The Old-Fashioned Way And Locals Love It
A replica of the U.S. Capitol dome sits on the roof of a barbecue restaurant. Yes, a capitol dome. On a barbecue joint. The dome went up in 1984, a few years after National Geographic called the place the barbecue capital of the world. I like how the owners took that title literally and built a monument to prove it.

‘Spill the Tea!’ brews up praise, heads to Edenton
Last weekend’s opening of the locally produced musical “Spill the Tea!” drew rave reviews on social media. “It is wonderful — very professionally done! Congratulations to all involved,” one person wrote on Facebook. “It was absolutely fantastic,” another said. “I felt like I was at Broadway,” wrote a third. “‘Spill the Tea!’ has been described as ‘Les Misérables’ meets ‘Hamilton,’” show creator Laurie Edwards said earlier this year. “It combines pop, hip-hop, ballads and traditional Broadway styles with bold characters and a witty script.” The musical opened at Arts of the Albemarle’s Maguire Theatre in Elizabeth City, and two more performances are scheduled this weekend in Edenton. Edwards wrote the show with a grant from America 250 NC. It tells the story of Edenton’s Penelope Barker and 50 other North Carolina women who, in October 1774, organized a boycott of British imports to protest Parliament’s taxes on the colonies. The protest became known as the Edenton Tea Party. A New York City native, Edwards had a long career in marketing and advertising in New York and New Jersey before she and her husband, Will Raucci, moved to the region. She served as AoA’s executive director from 2018 to 2022. The
