MONTGOMERY COUNTY, Md. ( DC News Now ) – Transit and government officials gathered at the Paul S. Sarbanes Transit Center on Tuesday to share more details about the Summer Red Line Construction Plan.

Officials reassured commuters that they’re doing everything they can to make the transition to the temporary shuttle bus service as seamless as possible.

In just over five weeks, the Glenmont, Wheaton, Forest Glen, Silver Spring and Takoma stations will all be closed for construction — including renovations and the completion of the Purple Line mezzanine in Silver Spring.

Leaders say they are preparing for the impact this shutdown will have on commuters.

“We are working as a collaborative team to make this impact as minimal as possible and really bring better transportation to the area,” Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) general manager and CEO Randy Clarke said.

One way they’re ensuring the shuttle service moves efficiently throughout Montgomery County is by adding 7.5 miles of temporary curbside bus lanes on major corridors.

“This includes segments along Georgia Avenue, Veirs Mill Road, Colesville Road and East-West Highway,” Maryland Department of Transportation (MDOT) assistant secretary Joe McAndrew said.

During the station closures, there will also be incentives for commuters to utilize other transit services in the region.

“The Maryland Transit Administration will be offering discounted $3.00 one-way fares along the MARC Brunswick Line which runs right through here, as well as our commuter buses that serve the impacted corridor,” McAndrew said.

County officials said they are aware this will be a major adjustment for many.

“You all have been more than patient with construction, and this summer, even though we’re doing this planning now, we know we will face hiccups,” Montgomery County Council Vice President Kate Stewart (D) said.

But they are confident the temporary shuttle service will be a viable solution in getting people to their destination as quickly as possible.

“It is going to be tremendously helpful for the people who still have to get to work every day and who rely on public transportation,” Montgomery County Councilmember Evan Glass (D) said.

Red Line closures begin on June 1. The Takoma station will reopen on June 30, and the remaining four stations will be closed until August 30.
