Letter: Track team says ‘thank you’
The Toledo Jr/Sr High Track & Field team wants to give a huge shout out and heartfelt thank you to the Confederated Tribes of Siletz for their contribution fund that was awarded to the team in August 2023. With that money, we were able to purchase a new timing system, which enabled us to continue to host track meets during our spring season and opens doors to possibly hosting “all comer” meets in the summer for the county. We hope to share our love of this sport with many more individuals/athletes in our community. Once again, thank you Confederated Tribes of Siletz. Janet Lohonyay Toledo

Take a rhod trip to the wetlands
Layers of wood chips and mulch soften the steps along the half dozen connecting trails that crisscross the Cutler City Wetlands Open Space, pathways lined with deep green thickets of salal, elderberry and evergreen huckleberry. The trails wind and loop through a terrain that is remarkably diverse for an area only slightly more than 26 acres. At the eastern end and in the center, are the swampy ponds or skunk-weed marshes that give the open space its name. There are also a few majestic old-growth Sitkas, thick stands of alders and shore pines, their trunks cloaked in the pale green feathers of Oregon beaked moss.
Lincoln City man accused of killing hotel guest, stealing guest’s dog facing multiple charges
LINCOLN CITY, Ore. – A 30-year-old Lincoln City man is accused of killing a hotel guest in order to steal the guest’s dog, according to court documents. According to probable cause affidavit filed in Lincoln County Circuit Court, Roland Evans-Freke is charged with two counts of second-degree murder, first-degree robbery, second-degree assault, and first-degree manslaughter. Lincoln City police were called to the Ashley Inn on Highway 101 just after 10 p.m. on May 15 for a report of a physical disturbance, the affidavit said. The police officer’s report said that police arrived and found two citizens restraining Evans-Freke while a 69-year-old victim, identified as Bradley Cole of Milwaukie, Oregon, lay motionless and covered in blood. After reviewing video captured by the hotel’s cameras, police learned that Evans-Freke had been outside of the hotel smoking a cigarette when the victim came out to walk his dog, the affidavit said. According to the police report, Evans-Freke approached the victim and then assaulted him by punching, kicking and kneeing him for several minutes before leaving with man’s dog. Evans-Freke then returned to the scene and assaulted the victim again twice as the victim lay on the ground, the police report said. Court documents said that the victim had severe facial trauma and, despite resuscitation attempts, he was pronounced dead at the scene.
