Captain Shreve boys basketball coach Corey Deans , who coached the Gators to the 2023-24 District 1-5A title, is no longer running the school’s successful program.

“I got fired,” Deans told The Times. “(Principal Bryant) Sepulvado said they were going in a different direction.”

Hired in 2019 by former principal Ginger Gustavson, Deans had previously coached at Green Oaks before making the move to Gatorland.

He was 123-36 overall with three of this teams reaching the LHSAA quarterfinals, including his final team, which lost on a buzzer-beating 3-pointer to semifinalist Southwood. Deans final team was 28-6 overall and 12-2 in the district.

Deans plans to remain in coaching.

Sepulvado could not immediately be reached for comment.

Deans coached the Green Oaks to an 18-10 regular season in his only season there and to the second round of the LHSAA Class 3A state playoffs. The Giants were 3-2 and finished second in District 1-3A.

A former assistant coach at Southwood with current Centenary assistant coach Eddie Hamilton, Deans was an LSWA Class 2A Player of the Year for Lakeview in 2003 while leading his team to a 41-0 record.
