Former Cumberland County PIO, Firefighter Dies, Family Says
John Bruetsch, a New Cumberland native living in Summerdale, passed away on June 10, his sister Karen Blazina announced on Facebook on Monday. "Today I lost my younger brother. Unexpected that the man, the husband, the father, the grandfather, the brother, the uncle, the fireman, the PIO for Cumberland County answered his last call on earth. He is loved and will be missed. You fought a great fight John Bruetsch ....peace."
Interstate 81 Welcome Center to Reopen After Upgrades
The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) has announced that the northbound Interstate 81 Welcome Center in Franklin County will reopen at 7:00 PM on Friday, June 7. The facility had been closed since Monday for the installation of a new energy-efficient heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) system. This installation is part of a Guaranteed Energy Savings Act (GESA) project, a collaboration initiated by PennDOT and the Department of General Services in 2021, aimed at upgrading HVAC and lighting systems to enhance energy efficiency and reduce utility costs.
Bridge inspections scheduled this week at I-81/Route 581 in Cumberland County
The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) has announced that bridge inspections are scheduled this week at Interstate 81 and Route 581 in Cumberland County. Weather permitting, on Tuesday, an inspection will be performed on the Route 581 ramp bridges spanning northbound I-81 between Mile Marker 59.1 and 59.2 in Hampden Township. This work will be from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. There will be alternating left and right lane closures on northbound I-81 during those hours.
Franklin County Art Alliance Hosts 52nd Annual Exhibition Featuring Local Art and Awards
The Franklin County Art Alliance opened its 52nd Annual Exhibition on Sunday June 9, with a reception and award ceremony at Calvary United Methodist Church, 150 Norlo Drive in Fayetteville. Best of Show was awarded to Cindy Roberts Downs of Clear Spring, MD, and over $2500 worth of other awards were distributed to artists from throughout Franklin and Fulton Counties and Washington County, MD. The show features 270 works by 79 area artists and will remain on view through Thursday June 13, from 2-7pm. A wide variety of paintings, photographs, prints and sculptures by area artists were judged by Steven Pearson, Chair of Creative Expression and the Arts and Professor of Studio Art at McDaniel College in Westminster, MD, and Susan Benigni-Landis, artist and educator from Lewisberry, PA. Door prizes will be awarded each day throughout the show: original works of art by Alliance members, including last year’s Best of Show winner Kent Roberts of Shippensburg, PA. Adams County Farmers Market Hosts Second Annual Fairy Festival in Gettysburg
The Adams County Farmers Market (ACFM) will host its second annual Fairy Festival on June 15 at the Gettysburg Rec Park from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. The event, held alongside the regular farmers market, will feature over 25 vendors offering magic-themed products. Activities include family-friendly entertainment, face painting, wand-making crafts for children, and live music. Admission is free, supported by the Union Hotel in Gettysburg.
