SHELL LAKE — In Lakeland West Conference softball, the Shell Lake Lakers took a pair from Mellen on Thursday, April 25.

In game one, Maddie Melton pitched a complete game win, striking out 14 Mellen batters. Melton had control of her fastball and change up all game.

“Maddie pitched an outstanding game against a Mellen team that wasn’t afraid to swing the bats,” said Laker coach Dave Zebro. “This was a complete team win with great defensive play in the field and with our bats continuing to get better at the plate.

Batting highlights included: Kierra Harrington was 2-4 batting with 2 RBIs. Shaylee Anderson was 2-4 with 1 RBI. Macy Melton went 2-3 with 2 RBIs, and designated player Grace Naessen hit 2-3 with one RBI.

“The Lakers remained aggressive on the base pads taking advantage of any opportunity provided by the Mellen defense,” said Coach Zebro.

Freshman Naessen threw a great game two, keeping the Mellen hitters off balance in a 3-inning, 15-0 win.

“Grace pitched a no-hitter against the Mellen offense by mixing up her pitches throughout the game,” said Zebro. “The Lakers took advantage of some defensive miscues from the otherwise-stout Mellen defense, pushing the bases whenever possible.”

Harrington was 3-3 batting. Anderson was 2-3 with 2 RBIs. Maddie Melton was 3-3. Freshman Alleigha Stevenson recorded her first varsity hit, with 2 RBIs.

On Thursday, May 2, the Shell Lake girls will host the Grantsburg Pirates in a 5 p.m. game. Friday, May 3, the Lakers are on the road at Clayton/Turtle Lake at 5 p.m.
