U.S. 40 bridge to close and be replaced in western Kansas

WALLACE COUNTY, Kan. (KSNW) — Drivers using U.S. Highway 40 in Wallace County will soon face a detour west of Sharon Springs.

The Kansas Department of Transportation plans to close the U.S. 40 bridge over the Union Pacific railroad starting Monday, April 1.

The bridge is about six miles west of Sharon Springs and 10 miles east of the Colorado state line.

KDOT says workers will remove and replace the old bridge. Weather permitting, the $5.5 million project is expected to be finished by the end of the year.

While the bridge is closed, traffic will be detoured on U.S. 40, Kansas Highway 27, and Interstate 70 in Kansas, and U.S. Highway 385 in Colorado.

This is the last of three bridge replacements on U.S. 40 in Wallace County. The other two are east of Sharon Springs.

The U.S. 40 bridge over the Smoky Hill River should be completed this fall.

The other bridge also spans the railroad. It is expected to be fully complete in 2025.
