SEYMOUR ( KFDX/KJTL ) — The Seymour Chamber of Commerce is honoring a Texas legend by celebrating the Thomas Calloway Lea III mural in the Seymour post office.

Thomas Calloway Lea III was an artist, novelist, and historian who famously painted murals throughout the 1900s in towns in New Mexico, Texas and Mexico, creating what is now known as the Tom Lea Trail.

On Saturday, April 13, the Seymour Chamber of Commerce celebrated the mural with an educational and fun dedication and commemoration event that featured singers, dancers, and vendors selling items.

Quanah Parker`s great-great-grandson brought items to show and says that much of his heritage isn’t written down, so he shares stories like he did today because it’s his way of keeping his heritage alive.

“There are so many other Comanches doing so many other things to keep our heritage alive, like how thirty minutes ago there were drummers and dancers out there in the street doing our songs and dances,” special guest speaker Lance Tahmahkera said. “We have artists; we have people that teach our language.”

Tahmahkera also does his part in keeping the Comanche culture and heritage alive.

“For me, I just get asked to share stories; I’m a storyteller.,” he explained. “It’s just my way of contributing to keeping our culture alive.”

Additionally, a group of children put on a display that showcased the tribal nations of Texas through clay and artwork.

The mural is located in the Seymour post office on 210 North Washington Street .
