Efforts mounted for flood-stranded families
CLAUDVILLE, Va. — Multiple entities have joined forces to aid families stranded in the remote Kibler Valley area as a result of recent flooding that washing out roads. “They’re getting closer to normal,” said Pamela Smith, vice president of the Ararat Ruritan Club, which is serving as a rallying point for the rescue efforts that began in the early morning hours Friday and are still ongoing. “We’re kind of just planning it day by day,” Smith added Monday regarding clearing operations involving heavy equipment to remove large debris. Those left stranded by the flooding were said to include a chemotherapy patient, a person in a wheelchair, someone in the early stages of Alzheimer’s disease, a stroke survivor and a person recovering from surgery. Due to those health and medical issues, the primary concern was no access for emergency personnel to reach the residents’ homes if needed. Smith explained that the Ararat Ruritan Club conducted a community meeting as part of a countywide volunteer response to the situation “to try to get all the ducks in a row.” The club has been serving in a support role for the relief mission given its proximity to flood-affected areas. Meanwhile, a company in

Flooding 'a nightmare' for businesses impacted
The businesses were different but the scene was the same in the aftermath of severe flooding along the Ararat River in Mount Airy: people standing in mud-covered doorways solemnly surveying the damage from rushing water. “It’s a nightmare,” Kristen Sprinkle, an employee of the N.C. Division of Motor Vehicles’ License Plate Agency on Riverside Drive, commented Monday while conversing outside with city Fire Chief Brian Lowe. “We lost everything,” Sprinkle said of the effects at the office from heavy rain Saturday night. It reportedly dumped more than 8 inches on the area, prompting rescues of people trapped in both residences and vehicles while driving through floodwaters, Mayor Jon Cawley said, with untold damages caused. That included computer equipment and other items on down to license plates and renewal stickers housed in the DMV office. “We’re waiting on the state to come and audit,” Sprinkle said of inventorying everything damaged. Meanwhile, DMV officials announced Monday afternoon that they do not know when Mount Airy’s only license plate office will reopen due to what they termed “significant damage” from the weekend flood. “We were here all day yesterday (Sunday) working,” Sprinkle said. Other areas of Surry, such as Pilot Mountain, also were
