Lakeside traffic reroutes continue during sewer construction
Traffic continues to be rerouted through downtown Lakeside as the Lakeside County Water and Sewer District replaces sections of a sewer line to increase capacity and meet the needs of development in area. All construction projects are expected to wrap up in November, with work typically taking place between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. The northbound lane of Blacktail Road will be closed for sewer replacement work through Sept. 19, according to project updates from Robert Peccia and Associates, the engineering company managing the infrastructure upgrades. The southbound lane of Blacktail Road, starting at the Stoner Creek Bridge, will become a one-way road and will be detoured to Stoner Creek Road. Through Sept. 19, the southbound lane of U.S. 93 between Adams Street and Stoner Loop will be closed at four intermittent locations in 60-foot segments. Traffic will be shifted into the turn lane, and the turn lane will be used only for southbound traffic at these locations. Work at the intersection of Bierney Creek Road and U.S. 93 has wrapped up, a closure that required a detour via Adams Street. Sewer replacement work that required the closure of Stoner Creek Road has been completed. Access to downtown businesses will

Montana's Cheapest Glacier Basecamp Was Built for a Railroad That Left
In 1891, a Fort Benton banker named Charles Edward Conrad went into business with three sitting members of the Great Northern Railway’s board of directors, put up his own capital, and platted a townsite in the Flathead Valley. The point was to make it the railroad’s division point. It worked for exactly 12 years. His […]

Smoother travel expected on U.S. 93 West of Whitefish
A smoother surface and a return to some two-lane travel are expected to bring reprieve to drivers passing through the U.S. 93 West of Whitefish construction zone this week. Except near retaining wall work, U.S. 93 was slated to return to two travel lanes on Saturday, Aug, 29, barring unforeseen circumstances including excessive groundwater during excavation activities. In an interview with the Pilot last month, Luke Francis, Montana Department of Transportation's Missoula District projects delivery engineer, said that pervasive groundwater has been challenging. It must be addressed immediately when found and has contributed to longer wait times. He cited high traffic volumes as the primary cause of longer wait times going through the one-way zone. Becca MacLean, a spokesperson for the project, addressed a community member's safety concerns via email last week. A video taken Sunday, Aug. 16 shared with the Whitefish Pilot showed two lines of traffic meeting head on in the one-way construction zone. According to MacLean, a motorhome ran a red light through the pilot car zone. MacLean said the team takes feedback seriously and as a result, requested more Highway Patrol presence and worked to create additional pullouts in single lane areas. MacLean also addressed safety

Montana historian honored after restoring Whitefish's Bruck
After restoring the Great Northern Railroad’s only remaining Bruck, Whitefish historian Paul Snyder was selected as a 2026 recipient of the Montana Historical Society’s Heritage Keeper Award. The Bruck’s roots go back to the early 20th century, when a one-coach rail line called the Galloping Goose carried mail, passengers and freight from Whitefish and Columbia Falls to Kalispell for nearly half a century. For economic reasons, Great Northern discontinued this short train in 1950. Shortly thereafter, Great Northern ordered a rare, custom-designed bus/truck unit called the Bruck, No. 101, from Kenworth Motor Truck Corporation, to run the discontinued route. The 44,000-pound rail car on wheels was equipped with a 220-horsepower engine. Painted like a signature orange and green rail car, it looked like a runaway train as it traveled down U.S. 93 on its first trip to Kalispell on July 17, 1951. The Bruck was a workhorse. It averaged six daily round trips to Kalispell for the next 20 years. The front section could accommodate 20 passengers with overhead baggage while the rear could carry seven tons of freight. After Amtrak took over rail passenger service in 1972, the Great Northern's Bruck became part of a bygone era. The combo

Diagonal parking comes to Libby's Main Ave.
Diagonal parking on Main Avenue in Libby has been met with a warm response. The street department recently enacted the change following a city council vote at the July 20 meeting. The streets committee recommended approving the move following discussion at March 18 and July 7 meetings of the city’s Lights, Streets and Sidewalks Committee. The new parking runs from the end of Main Avenue, at its intersection with West Second St., to West Fifth St. on the west side of the avenue. It created one dozen more spaces than the 29 that previously existed. Streets Committee Chair Gail Burger, along with committee members Brian Zimmerman and Erica Schaefer, gave their blessings for the change at the July 7 committee meeting. “The streets committee has been looking at a lot of different options for parking and it’ll help with parking at the ball field when there are games there,” Burger said. “Also, during Ignite the Nites and the chainsaw carving. The carving is at the end of Mineral and we do see a lot of traffic backed up over those areas.” According to deputy city administrator Gary Beach’s proposal for council, the purpose was to increase downtown parking supply while
