Huacuja maintains lead over Scheller as more ballots counted in county commission race
Anthony Huacuja has maintained his lead over Tessa Scheller in the District 2 race for the Clatsop County Board of Commissioners as more ballots were counted. After an update Thursday, Huacuja led Scheller 50% to 49%, or 1,122 to 1,094, a slightly tighter split than late Tuesday night.

Recall petition filed against Seaside city councilor over potential book restrictions
SEASIDE — A recall petition has been filed against City Councilor Steve Dillard over his call for age restrictions on books at the Seaside Public Library. R.J. Marx, a former editor of the Seaside Signal and South County reporter for The Astorian, filed the petition on behalf of Freedom to Read Seaside. Marx’s wife, Eve, serves on the Library Board.
Knappa Fire District gets $1 million state grant for seismic retrofitting

With a league title in the bag, Warrenton High School baseball turned the page to a new chapter in their season: playoffs. Wednesday’s game against Yamhill-Carlton was the Warriors opening-round test with a return trip to the quarterfinals on the line. Behind Talon McGrorty’s complete game and an eight-run third inning, Warrenton beat the Tigers 11-1.
Runolfson serves at Navy helicopter squadron in Japan
Airman Recruit Brandon Runolfson, of Hammond, serves in the U.S. Navy as an aviation electrician's mate in Helicopter Sea Combat Squadron 12 in Japan. Runolfson graduated from Warrenton High School in 2023 and joined the Navy a year ago. "I joined because my grandpa was a career Navy man,” he said. "I wanted to follow in his footsteps. I looked up to him, and I thought it would be a good way to see the world."

A prime example is the Site of Astoria’s First Electric Generating Station Marker (near the Rivershore Motel): “On Christmas Eve, 1885, direct current flowed from a small dynamo in a planer shed of West Shore Lumber Mills to light Astoria’s first electric lamps. Wires strung across housetops connected the dynamo to 30 arc lamps.
