Comings and goings, key events in Elmira between 1953 and 2026
America turned 250 years old this summer. I organized a timeline of local history for a talk given earlier in July. This is part three of a three-part series . Included here are my highlights from 1953 to 2026. 1953 : Jones Court on Elmira’s Eastside opened, providing 84 units of low-income housing. A police shootout in 1984 left three dead. Ernie, who played for Syracuse University, was the first African American to hold the title. 1964 : Twelve-year-old Mary Theresa Simpson was kidnapped in downtown Elmira. She was found murdered a few days later. Her killer was unknown for over 60 years, until 2026 . 1965 : The Ann Page opened in Horseheads, preparing
