New Orleans live music this week: Wayne Hancock, Paul Sanchez and more
The music options in New Orleans this week include a throwback honky-tonk singer at Rock 'N' Bowl and a local singer-songwriter in what is for him an unusual venue. Wayne “The Train” Hancock’s 1995 debut album, “Thunderstorms and Neon Signs,” was like something out of a honky-tonk time machine. The Texas native’s nasally, high-lonesome voice was reminiscent of Hank Williams. The overall sound and style of his music harkened back to an earlier era of Western swing, honky-tonk and hardcore hillbilly country, with elements of Texas rockabilly and blues thrown in as well. His signature blend came to be known as “Juke Joint Swing,” and he is its undisputed king. Hancock manages to sound like a throwback and cutting edge simultaneously.
