SAVANNAH, Ga. (WSAV) — A strong storm system moved through the region Thursday afternoon knocking out power to thousands and causing extensive damage to homes, trees, and powerlines due to strong wind gusts. A confirmed tornado is also likely to of produced damage in Montgomery and Toombs counties. More severe storms are possible as we head throughout the morning hours of Friday and as a result it will be a Weather Aware Day.

    FRIDAY SEVERE THREAT

We are likely to have another chance of severe storms to keep an eye on as the slow-moving cold front pushes through today.

Our threat for severe weather will not be as high as yesterday and the timeframe is also different. Instead the afternoon and evening timeline, we will see strong and severe storms in the morning hours: 6 a.m. – 2 p.m.

There is still a chance of severe storms with damaging winds and large hail as the greatest impacts for this morning. Heavy rain and localized minor flooding will be possible too especially for low lying areas with poor drainage. Another dose of soaking rain and gusty winds will lead to another threat of downed trees and powerlines.

    TIMING

Starting around 6 a.m. we will start to see a few cells enter the region from the west. Throughout the early morning hours storms become more widespread in the coverage and after sunrise we can expect a few storms to contain heavy rain, gusty winds, and potentially even large hail. As we head into the afternoon our cold front will move through and storms will start to settle down with only a few lingering showers and storms possible early on.
