SAVANNAH, Ga. (WSAV) – The former fairgrounds property in Savannah is one step closer to development.

On Tuesday, the Savannah Metropolitan Planning Commission (MPC) approved an amendment of the Future Land Use map from Parks and Recreation to Planned Development for the 66.5-acre property on Meding Street.

The fairgrounds item is now scheduled for a Savannah City Council vote at their meeting on Thursday, May 23.

The intent is to turn the fairgrounds into a mixed-use development for affordable housing, retail and recreation spaces and other uses.

The city recently received a $2.5 million housing grant for sanitary infrastructure improvements at the property.
