More than $60,000 has been raised in an effort to reopen an iconic diner located on Pacific Coast Highway in Santa Monica.
Patrick’s Roadhouse, which opened its doors in 1973, closed on April 21 but its owner is still hoping to negotiate a new long-term lease with the landlord despite several obstacles.
Current owner Anthony Fischler owes back rent of approximately $200,000, said to be due in large part to the COVID-19 pandemic, and needs about $50,000 more for immediate building improvements, the Santa Monica Daily Press reported.
The diner is known for its eccentric decor, “flashy shamrock theme” and history of serving some of Hollywood’s biggest celebrities, including Arnold Schwarzenegger.
“One day when Arnold was eating at his usual table, his mother came into the restuarant and didn’t like what he was eating. She pushed everyone aside, went in the kitchen and yelled at them ‘ILL COOK!’ She then made him a concoction called ‘Bauer Friihstiick’. This is German for ‘Farmers Breakfast.’ This custom meal was so gargantuous and distinct that it was later renamed ‘The Governator’ for easier pronunciation and put on the menu for all to order!” the Patrick’s Roadhouse website states.
In addition to Schwarzenegger, Patrick’s Roadhouse cites Lucille Ball, Sophia Loren, Farrah Fawcett, Tom Hanks, Sean Penn, Goldie Hawn, Kurt Russell, Teri Garr, David Hasslehoff, Dean Martin, Zsa Zsa Gabor and Johnny Carson among its celebrity visitors through the years.
