Hart High School held a pep rally in the gym and made a surprise reveal of the new mascot, Friday morning.
During the rally, Principal Jason d’Autremont took center stage to reveal the new Hart Hawks logo to seniors and freshmen. Boos rang out from the stands to the announcement of the change, however, the mood quickly changed to cheers as d’Autremont revealed the school’s new mascot, a live Harris Hawk named Rachel.
“Rachel will be featured during our football games,” exclaimed d’Autremont to the students.
During a dance presentation, unprompted, Rachel flew around the gym, conjuring more loud cheers from students.
In recognition of the school’s history, d’Autremont brought out three generations of Hart principals starting in 1983.

The pep rally closed with a video slideshow highlighting the seniors ushering in the start of graduation season.
Why did Hart High School change their mascot?
The Hart High School mascot change was a four-year process marred in controversy . On June 6, 2020, the school received a petition to retire the mascot. In July 2021, the Governing Board voted 4-1 to remove the Indian mascot.
A mascot committee was formed to find a new mascot. In a school-wide vote, the Hawk beat out the Bison, and Trailblazers.
