This Sunday, the County Fire Pickleball team is hosting “Dinko de Mayo” to raise money for Tunnel to Towers, a non-profit that supported the family of slain firefighter Tory Carlon.

In 2022, Chad Chebbi and two of his firefighter buddies decided to form a pickleball team that did more than just keep them in shape and entertained while waiting for the next 911 call; but one that would raise money to support non-profits and those who are in need.

“Guys at the stations are playing pickleball and we wanted to put something together to host tournaments to get the guys together and play. Pickleball is good for us, it’s good for our physical health and our mental health,” Chebbi said.

While the County Fire Pickleball is comprised of mostly firefighters, all are welcome to participate in their tournaments.

In the past, County Fire Pickleball has been able to raise money for a Kern County Firefighter’s family whose son was killed in a car crash, along with other organizations.

This year, on Sunday, May 5, the organization will raise money for the Stephen Siller Tunnel to Towers Foundation through the Dinko De Mayo Tournament.

“The tournament this Sunday, Dinko De Mayo, Dinko a pickleball term meaning soft hit, is supporting Tunnel to Towers. They support military and first responders if they are injured in the line of duty or come back disabled,” Chebbi said.

The County Fire Pickleball team decided to support Tunnel to Towers after they paid the rest of Tori Carlon’s home mortgage after he was killed in the Station 81 shooting in June of 2021.

The Dinko De Mayo event is scheduled to take place at the Valencia Paseo Club from 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m., according to Chebbi.

Registration is $50 per person which includes entry, a drink ticket and a t-shirt, according to officials.

“Margaritas and pickleball, what more can you ask for,” officials ask.

The event will have three different levels of play available to anyone wishing to play and support the County Fire Pickleball tournament, along with Tunnel to Towers.

The Valencia Paseo Club is located at 27650 Dickason Drive.
