Man gets back at city by painting mural of boat on the side of his fence in Monterey, CA
A Monterey County man who was told to get his boat out of public view did as the city asked, but then he had an artistic epiphany. In response to the city ordinance, Etienne Constable built a fence and had his neighbor paint a photo-realistic version of the boat on the fence. Pictures of the mural have since gone viral online. Constable mentioned that in 2023 he received a letter from the city instructing him to build a 6-foot fence to conceal his boat from public view. Adhering to the directive, Constable collaborated creatively with his neighbor, an artist, to construct...
A labor of love is transforming a historic theater in Salinas.
Celia Jiménez here, thinking about El Rey in downtown Salinas and the place it will become, from the new large black and white sign outside to what it hides behind closed doors. One of the reasons I’m fascinated by it is because I love working with my hands. There...

Songs follow Casey Frazier. They appear when he is traveling down some lonesome road or ducking into a coffee shop, drawn and weary from work. They drift along as he wanders a forest trail, reconnects with an old friend or weeps over a loss. Frazier’s experiences become his lyrics, his music – rich with life as we know it. He may be the purest singer-songwriter, because Frazier tells us stories in song in a tone that is American and a voice that embraces. And really, do we need to say any more than that? Don’t think so. A Casey Frazier performance is a must. Especially when it happens in an inviting, intimate venue like the new Wendi Kirby Music. [DF]

Bar pies are a unique regional pizza, and Alvarado Street dresses them up.
Many of the regional pizza styles have broken from their geographical bonds. New York, Chicago, even Detroit-style pies are familiar to diners everywhere. But two types may still be a mystery. It’s unlikely that any parlor in Monterey County serves St. Louis-style pizza – where would they find provel, its processed cheese hallmark? And the tavern or bar pies found in the upper Midwest and a few northeastern states were also no-shows, at least until now.

A new arts and culture group is subtly advancing a right-wing agenda.
At first glance, an event taking place on Thursday, May 16 in Carmel Valley appears to be a neutral discussion, “Offshore Wind Power: Eco Friend or Foe.” “California Arts and Sciences Institute has assembled an elite panel of experts to address our Central Coast concerns,” the event description reads. The photo on the event page shows a dead whale on the sand, captioned to say: “Dead Humpback Whale on Lido Beach, NY, near offshore wind operations.” But according to news reports, the whale was likely struck by a vessel.
Artichoke season: 8 great spring recipes
Spanish settlers introduced artichokes to California in the early 1900s. This thistle took to the state's cool, damp coastal regions so well that today, 99% of artichokes sold in the United States are grown in California. Castroville, which anchors Monterey County's "Artichoke Trail," produces almost two-thirds of the world's artichokes. Known as the "Artichoke Capital of the World," Castroville hosts an annual Artichoke Festival, which happens June 8-9, 2024.
