San Jose Sharks top prospect Will Smith will get his closest taste of pro hockey as he was added to Team USA's 2024 IIHF World Championship roster.

Smith joins Sharks forward Luke Kunin as San Jose's two representatives on Team USA.

Smith hasn't signed his entry-level contract yet, but this tournament could gauge how ready he is to jump from the NCAA. It will be good for both his confidence level and GM Mike Grier's overall evaluation of his readiness for pro hockey.

Smith is the fifth player within the Sharks organization to go to Worlds. Along with Kunin on Team USA, Nico Sturm will play for Germany, Mikael Granlund will play for Finland, and Fabian Zetterlund will play for Sweden.

Smith's teammate and linemate Ryan Leonard also joins the USA World Championship roster. Leonard was the Washington Capitals first-round pick at the 2023 NHL Draft.
