The wave of sunshine that sent Bay Area natives flocking to the pool this week is about to come to an abrupt end. A cold front is currently moving in to the area ahead of the weekend, bringing an hours-long rainstorm with it.

Forecasters predict the rain to start late on Friday night and last through until late in the afternoon on Saturday. At least half an inch of rain is expected in San Francisco , while coastal ranges like Santa Cruz could see up to an inch, according to the National Weather Service.

The chance of rain is 100 percent throughout the region from 7am right up until about 4pm. Winds could gust as high as 23 mph, meteorologists said.

As for the temperature, Friday's high of 66 degrees will drop to a chilly 58 in San Francisco on Saturday. The low is currently forecasted at 47. Other nearby cities could experience lows in the mid-30s, however.

" Cold front on track to bring widespread rain, cooler temperatures, and gusty winds this weekend," the National Weather Service said. "Behind the cold front Saturday afternoon and evening, there is a slight chance for isolated thunderstorms across the area.

"Scattered showers will persist into Saturday evening, but conditions appear favorable for a few locally strong updrafts that would support a rumble of thunder or two, as well as small hail."

The good news is that the skies will clear again on Sunday. Forecasters said that a warm up is on tap for the rest of next week with highs of nearly 80 degrees predicted for San Francisco on Wednesday.
