La Jolla is part of Memorial Day weekend events planned across San Diego County to honor military members who died in service to the country.

The Mount Soledad National Veterans Memorial will host its annual tribute from 2 to 3 p.m. Monday, May 27, at 6905 La Jolla Scenic Drive South.

The event in particular will honor fallen members of the 3rd Battalion, 5th Marines based at Camp Pendleton who served in Sangin, Afghanistan, in 2010-11.

The keynote speaker will be Maj. Gen. Jason Morris, director of operations at Marine Corps headquarters. Morris previously served as commander of the 3rd Battalion, 5th Marines in Sangin, and his most recent assignment was as commanding general of the Marine Corps Recruit Depot and Western Recruiting Region in San Diego.

Other highlights will include music by the Marine Band San Diego, a wreath laying and a flyover.

Free parking is available at Mount Soledad Presbyterian Church, 6551 Soledad Mountain Road, and at San Diego French American School, 6550 Soledad Mountain Road. Find out more at memorialdaylive.com .

Also this weekend, the fourth annual Bouquet Ride on Saturday, May 25, honors the memory of Army Cpl. Gregory “Shortie” Millard , who died in 2007 during the Iraq War.

More than 200 cyclists were expected to join the morning Fallen Hero Honor Ride starting at California Bicycle at 7462 La Jolla Blvd. and heading to Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery in Point Loma.

Kevin, Jill and Jason Millard, owners of California Bicycle, are among the Gold Star families scheduled to be recognized at the event.
