These California cities are the most dog-friendly destinations in the U.S.

SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — The Golden State is the best state for people traveling with their furry friends, according to a recent report by USA Today. Three cities in California have placed in a list of the top 10 dog-friendly vacation destinations, including San Diego.

San Luis Obispo was ranked No. 2 on the list, followed by Santa Barbara at No. 3. Meanwhile San Diego also placed in the top 10, ranked at No 6.

The list was compiled using nationwide data that looked at the number of dog-friendly places to stay, restaurants, bars and vet offices per 100,000 residents. It also analyzed the number of dog-friendly trails and beaches within 50 miles in each city. The full methodology can be found here .

San Diego averaged around 21 dog-friendly restaurants per 100,000 residents, according to USA Today. It’s also known for its wide offerings of outdoor play areas including 10 dog-friendly beaches within 50 miles of the city, and 102 hiking trails.

Flagstaff, Ariz. topped the list, averaging nearly 56 dog-friendly places to stay per 100,000 residents. It also boasts more than 130 trails that allow dogs, as well as nearly 40 restaurants where people can bring their pup.

Rounding out the best dog-friendly travel destinations are Austin, Tex. at No. 4, Portland, Ore. at No. 5, Naples, Fla. at No. 7, Nashville, Tenn. at No. 8, Denver, Colo. at No. 9 and Key West, Fla. at No. 10.
