St. Paul residents in the Midway neighborhood have been offering assurances to one another that they did, in fact, also hear the music.

An eerie mystery has unfolded in the overnight hours Tuesday into Wednesday and again Wednesday into Thursday, with a recording of “Flower Duet” from the tragic opera Lakmé and other famous classical tunes blasting from...somewhere.

Neighborhood resident Frederick Melo, who is a reporter for the Pioneer Press, shared footage of the occurrence on Twitter.

The mystery has since begun to unravel, with St. Paul Police Sgt. Mike Ernster confirming on Thursday afternoon that the music was coming from a security feature at the old Herberger's store.

According to Ernster, officers responding to noise complaints traced the sound to an "anti-loitering type device" that plays music.

"Officers could not shut it off and people will need to make a complaint with the owner of the building since its private property or with the Saint Paul Department of Safety and Inspections to see if there is a way to get the music turned off or down so as it doesn’t disturb the whole area," Ernster wrote in an email Thursday afternoon.
