First baby eagles hatch on reborn Chesapeake island
Some eagle-eyed wildlife biologists have made a surprising discovery at Poplar Island. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and Maryland Port Authority have been rebuilding the Talbot County island over the last 25 years. What was once almost entirely open water is now more than 1,700 acres of rock-ringed land. One of the primary aims behind creating the island was to reestablish some of the habitat that waterfowl and shorebirds...
Maryland & Chesapeake Bay Fishing Report- May 30, 2024
Sailing out of West Ocean City, Captain Monty Hawkins of Morning Star Fishing Charters reported that sea bass fishing has improved pretty drastically over the past week. There have been days where their anglers really had to work for a bite, but the fishing, generally, has been much better all around with fish taking jigs and baited rigs. The skipper has been marking large clouds of sea bass on his electronics on most outings, and there has been plenty of life out there in the form of whales, dolphins, and even a few loggerhead turtles. Although they have had to battle some serious fog on several occasions, sea bass fishing was good yesterday (5/29) with a boat full of regulars; despite a slow pick to start out the morning, a couple anglers had catches in the double digits and everyone took home fillets for the table. Give them a shout to reserve your spot on the next trip!
The Bay Country Chorus Brings Barbershop Harmony to the Heart of Maryland
The Bay Country Chorus is the Easton Maryland chapter of the Barbershop Harmony Society. Since 1995 the chorus has been entertaining throughout the mid-shore of Maryland. Our performances are mostly at senior living facilities, nursing homes, and venues where residents are in rehab or dealing with dementia. Most of these special residents are unable to get out and enjoy live music. Quite simply we bring the music to them.
House of the Week: “Fenwick’s Folly”, circa 1890
When I drove up to this charming property in Neavitt, it reminded me of my late sister’s house in East Hampton, Long Island. The wood shake shingles that have escaped the indignity of being painted and have instead been allowed to weather to a warm gray, the white trim, double hung windows and a simple front porch is a classic Long Island look. The light green half-French door is the perfect finishing touch.
Sending Shelly home
Chestertown to Tilghman Island can be a long drive, especially riding the whole way in a plastic box with air holes punched in the top. But for a special diamondback terrapin, the school bus trip was a one-way ride home. For the past year, Shelly has lived in an aquarium at Kent County Middle School in Chestertown as part of a research program. ...
