ST. LOUIS – A St. Louis man is accused of carjacking a person who gave him a ride.

According to the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department’s probable cause statement, the theft happened on March 27 in the 2900 block of California Avenue, located in the Benton Park West neighborhood.

Police claim the victim was at a gas station, driving his 2021 Kia K5. Several people at the gas station, including Dujuan M. Spears, asked the victim for a lift. Police did not disclose if the victim was acquainted with the group or not.

The victim drove everyone to an apartment complex on California Ave.

After getting out the car, police claim Spears turned around, brandished a gun, and demanded the victim’s keys and other property. The victim turned over his car keys, cash, bank card, and iPhone.

Spears drove off in the victim’s Kia. The vehicle was later recovered.

The St. Louis Circuit Attorney’s Office charged Spears with first-degree robbery and armed criminal action. Spears made his initial appearance in court on Monday. A judge ordered he remain jailed until trial.
