A St. Louis judge awarded a former police officer $23.5 million on Monday after he was brutally beaten by three white colleagues during a 2017 protest while working undercover.

Luther Hall made national news in 2017 when he attended one of several protests that struck because of the acquittal of Jason Stockley who was a former St. Louis officer that was charged with the murder of black man. During the protest Hall was working undercover and recording his own footage. After the attack he did he own investigation and sued the theee former colleagues – Randy Hays, Dustin Boone, and Christopher Myers.

While in court Monday Hall reflected on the horrific incident and talked about the physical and emotional damage that he endured. according to Kentucky today , Hall suffered several herniated discs and a jaw injury that left him unable to eat. He developed gallstones with complications, requiring surgeries. “Mr. Hall had to endure this severe beating and while that was happening, he knew it was being administered by his colleagues who were sworn to serve and protect,” Circuit Judge Joseph Whyte said.

Despite the physical and emotional toll of the attack, Hall decided to speak out against the culture of violence and racism within the St. Louis Police Department. He filed a lawsuit against the department, alleging that his attackers were motivated by racial bias and that the department failed to properly train and supervise its officers. His case brought national attention to the issue of police brutality and the need for reform within law enforcement agencies.
