EPA to fund San Haven cleanup
The Turtle Mountain band is getting some financial help to clean up the site of the former San Haven Hospital. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has doled out a one-million dollar grant to help revitalize 14 acres where the complex sits. The money comes from the so-called Brownfields Program. The former hospital is contaminated with asbestos…lead…and polychlorinated chemicals which affect building materials…soil…and water. San Haven operated as a tuberculosis sanitarium and state hospital from 1909 through 1987.

If new coach Rick Pitino is the most important man in the St. John’s basketball program, billionaire St. John’s booster Mike Repole might rank a close second. Repole, 51, is a 1991 St. John’s graduate who holds an honorary doctorate from the university. The Middle Village, Queens native founded Vitaminwater and Body Armor SuperDrink, which he sold separately to Coca Cola for nearly $10 billion combined. He also owns Repole Stable, which produced Mo Donegal, the horse that won the 2022 Belmont Stakes, and Forte, which was the Kentucky Derby favorite before it was scratched and will next run in the Belmont Stakes.

Dale L. Pederson passed away on May 5, 2023, surrounded by his family in Comfort Care at Presentation Medical Center in Rolla, ND. There will be a gathering of friends and family and time of sharing on Tuesday, May 9, 2023, beginning at 6 p.m. with the service at 7 p.m. at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church, Rolla ND. Funeral Services will be at the church on Wednesday, May 10th at 11 a.m. with burial in the Rolla Cemetery. Memorials may be directed to the Dale and Martha Hawk Museum or Rolette School Dollars for Scholars in memory of Dale.

DUNSEITH – The International Peace Garden is offering free opening-day gate admission for Mother’s Day on Sunday. Country Catering will be serving a buffet from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. Reservations are recommended but not required. The cost is $25 a person or $11 for children ages 12 and younger.

Man sentenced to life in federal prison for sex crimes
FARGO, N.D. (KFYR) - A federal judge in Fargo sentenced an Alabama man on Friday to life in federal prison for abusive sexual contact with a child under 12. Whitehorse Ducharme, 51, who is also known as Stanley Ducharme, previously lived in Belcourt, where authorities say he sexually abused a child from the ages of three to 11, starting in about 2008.
