Mifflinburg Sheetz undergoing remodel project
Mifflinburg, Pa. — A Union County Sheetz store is closed until next year for a remodel project. The Mifflinburg Sheetz at 240 East Chestnut Street closed last Monday, Sept. 14 so that the location could be remodeled, according to Nick Ruffner, public affairs manager for Sheetz. Ruffner expects the store to reopen early next year. The remodeled store will include new gas pumps, allowing 10 vehicles to fuel at once. The remodel project also will include alterations to the layout to best accommodate customer traffic including self-checkout stations and enhancements to the self-service beverage bars, Ruffner said. Employees at the Mifflinburg location were offered temporary positions elsewhere in the company while the remodel is underway. Sheetz has closed other stores in the region for remodel projects or refreshes. The Linden store in Lycoming County closed last month for a refresh and is expected to reopen in October. The Danville store also closed last year for several months for a full remodel.

Before Middle East deployment, Pa. Guard dad surprises daughter
Christmas came a little early for National Guard Staff Sgt. Wade Morehart's daughter this year. The Williamsport-area guardsman gave his 2-year-old a stuffed wolf, originally intended as a holiday gift, two weeks ago, knowing he'd be overseas this year. While she has other presents set aside for Dec. 25, Morehart said his daughter loves stuffed animals. He wanted her to have something to remind her of dad. "She loves it," he told the Lebanon Daily News. "She's actually been taking it to bed and stuff like that, so I got her all of her gifts early before I left." Morehart is one of 260 guard members from the Pennsylvania National Guard’s B and C companies, 1st Battalion, 109th Infantry Regiment. They were recognized during a deployment ceremony at Fort Indiantown Gap on Sept. 24. They'll soon depart for a year-long deployment to the Middle East as part of Operation Spartan Shield. Officials said the companies will be supporting U.S. Central Command and partner forces with security objectives in the region. Captain James Hughes, company commander of Charlie Company, said the companies will be mostly providing security operations across Kuwait. When the units started training for the mission, they were originally
