One dead, two injured in rollover
FORT THOMAS — A juvenile was killed when a Ranger ATV rolled in the area of Black Rock and Hinton roads. The accident occurred around 1 p.m. Saturday, May 27. One of the passengers in the ATV told Graham County Sheriff’s deputies the ATV was traveling southbound on Black Rock Road when an oncoming vehicle traveling northbound crossed into the southbound lane.
Cohort 17 moving into leadership positions
SAFFORD — Gila Valley Leadership Cohort 17 may have the most early success of any Leadership class to date. Leadership Cohort 17 celebrated its completion Thursday, during the Graham County Chamber of Commerce’s June Soiree at The Venue on Main, and attendees learned that two of the cohort’s participants are already moving into new leadership positions.

SAFFORD — Ryker Griffin is the winner of the logo contest for the The Gila Valley Samaritan Home. The Gila Valley Samaritan Home is a planned respite center for the homeless community, and will be located near the intersection of highways 70 and 191. It is currently undergoing remodeling and is set to open its doors in July 2023.

Connie Lee Smith, age 82, passed away the morning of May 20, 2023, at her home in Safford, Arizona. Connie was born in Lakeside, Arizona, on December 7, 1940, to Wallace and Nell Johnson. She attended and graduated from Lakeside High School in 1958, and then attended Lamson Jr Business College.
Community rallies following tragic youth UTV death
FORT THOMAS – In times of need, the Gila Valley stays strong and the community rallies to those tragically affected. And now, the community of Pima and Fort Thomas mourn the passing of one of its middle schoolers, Miguel Hernandez, 12, who tragically died Saturday in a UTV crash in Fort Thomas, while others attempt to recover from both physical and mental trauma.
Gila Valley History: Charles Roseberry Rogers
PIMA – Charles Roseberry Rogers, born Dec. 2, 1888, in Pima, Arizona, was the third child and second son of Louisa Christina Roseberry and Joseph Knight Rogers. When his father died in an accident, his mother had all 10 children at home. Within a year, his older siblings, Charlotte and Joseph were married, leaving Charles as the oldest child at home.
Community Pride Days are June 8-10
SAFFORD — The towns of Pima and Thatcher, City of Safford and Graham County are teaming for Community Pride Days this month. During Community Pride Days, which will run June 8-10, residents are entitled to one free load of residential trash at the landfill. No hazardous materials will be accepted.

Free landfill dumping during Community Pride Days June 8 – 10

SAFFORD — Service providers, nonprofit organizations, elected officials and more community leaders got their first look at the draft Community Health Assessment Thursday. The Graham County Health Department brought together at the Graham County General Services Building a wide array of concerned groups to review the data and offer suggestions on how to move forward on the top three priorities as defined by the participants in the Community Health Survey — access to health care, behavioral and mental health, and developing healthy lifestyles.
Southwest Gas volunteers to help Our Neighbor’s Farm and Pantry
SAFFORD — Southwest Gas employees will be pitching in this weekend to help those who help those in need. Twenty members from Southwest Gas’ BLUE (Building Lives Up Everywhere) volunteer team will be at Our Neighbor’s Farm and Pantry Saturday, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m., helping replace the farm’s drip irrigation system, build fencing for a chicken coop, weed the garden, install a concrete slab for a lending library, and sort cans in the pantry.

Expanded telemedicine services for veterinarian care combats access shortage

Arizona lawmakers are rethinking how access to health care is more than just for humans. A bill, which was signed into law early May, will allow local veterinarians to expand their services into telemedicine.
Eastern Arizona College reduces tax rate for 2024
THATCHER, Ariz. — Eastern Arizona College (EAC) has proposed a lower tax rate for the 2024 budget year to the Graham County Community College District Governing Board (Governing Board). The reduction in the College’s tax rate was made possible because the overall assessed value of property in Graham County has increased over the past year, having a net effect of providing additional revenue for EAC. The Governing Board will decide whether to act on EAC’s recommendation at its June board meeting.
