(FOX40.COM) — Firefighters and law enforcement officials are investigating the possibility of a serial arsonist after a series of unexplained fires in Downtown Sacramento.

Sacramento Fire Department responded to several “suspicious” fires near the Sawyer Hotel on J Street between 11 p.m. on Thursday and 3 a.m. on Friday. Firefighters said two of them were car fires inside of a parking garage, and three in a row were dumpster fires.

“It would be odd if they’re not related,” Sacramento Fire Department Battalion Chief Chris Swarbrick said about the fires. “It’s possibly the same arsonist running around.”

He added, “These are very worrisome because they’re car fires inside of buildings which will extend to the buildings and create large, large fires.”
